Step one
The plate, then the symptom
Model and serial off the rating plate — behind the oven door on a range, under the front lip on a cooktop — and a plain description of what it is doing. Most calls narrow to two or three candidates before the van moves.

Numbers, taken in the kitchen
Manifold pressure, igniter draw, element and sensor resistance, true cavity temperature against the set point, blower current at each speed. A reading either agrees with the symptom or it does not, and that is the whole diagnosis.

Grates and caps were discolouring badly down one side. Uneven flame from a partly blocked port and an air shutter out of spec. He cleaned, adjusted and matched all of them, not just the bad one.
